Postdoctoral position at the nexus of governance and disaster risk

Institutionen för ledarskap och ledning

The Swedish Defence University is an internationally renowned university in the area of defence, crisis management and security. We offer a unique academic environment where military and civilian researchers, teachers and students interact. We educate and train top-level executives, experts, and researchers for the task of analyzing and managing current and future crises, security issues and conflicts. The university educates all military officers in the Swedish armed forces and leads the academic progression of the military profession. We conduct research in the areas of Law with a focus on International and Operational Law, Leadership and Command & Control, Military History, Political Science, Systems Science for Defence and Security and War Studies.

Leadership and Command & Control is the scientific study of leading, that is, the actions taken to direct, coordinate resources, and influence an individual or a group to achieve a common goal. The subject focuses on the individual, organizational, and interorganizational factors that contribute to the process of achieving common goals. The subject is empirically based on the needs and challenges that are typical, and to some extent common, for actors and activities within defense, crisis management, and security. Leadership and Command & Control is a social science that draws and develops knowledge from, among other fields, behavioral science and design science. The subject covers issues related to leadership and command and control theory, leadership development, collaboration, crisis management, design of command and control systems, team issues, stress, selection, and the meaning of difficult conditions. There is also significant interest in gender and methodological issues within the subject.

Weather extremes and climate variability pose major challenges and demands for social-environmental systems to address the needs of societies, reduce vulnerabilities as well as protect endangered habitats and ecosystems. By focusing on governance and leadership in a climate change and disaster context, the successful applicant should advance our knowledge of disaster risk reduction and/or contribute to enhancing societies’ ability to prevent, adapt to and cope with climate variability and natural hazards.

If this sounds interesting to you and you have a PhD in social or behavioural sciences with relevance to the proposed topic, you are most welcome to apply for this postdoctoral position in the Department of Leadership and Command & Control at the Swedish Defense University (SEDU) in Stockholm. We welcome both Swedish and international applicants.

Leadership and Command & Control is an interdisciplinary subject that draws on and develops knowledge from behavioral science, social science and design science. The subjects of study are individuals and groups, functions and technical support as well as how they interact in defense, crisis management and security systems. We also study organizations and the conditions they provide for individuals' behavior. The subject enables studies at different analytical levels and the units of analysis can be individuals, organizations and societies. The department's research and education is closely linked to practices within the Swedish University of Defence's main area; defence, crisis management and security.

The research is also part of the Centre of Natural Hazards and Disaster Science (CNDS), a center for research on disaster risk reduction and crisis management. CNDS is a collaboration between Uppsala University, Karlstad University and the Swedish Defence University. We particularly welcome applicants with an interest to contribute to this multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research environment.
