Department of Military History

The Swedish Defence University is an internationally renowned university in the area of defence, crisis management and security. We offer a unique academic environment where military and civilian researchers, teachers and students interact. We educate and train top-level executives, experts, and researchers for the task of analyzing and managing current and future crises, security issues and conflicts. The university educates all military officers in the Swedish armed forces and leads the academic progression of the military profession. We conduct research in the areas of Law with a focus on International and Operational Law, Leadership and Command & Control, Military History, Political Science, Systems Science for Defence and Security and War Studies.

The position is located at the Department of Military History (MHA), Department of Military History (IMH) in Stockholm.

Description of subject area
At the Swedish Defense University, the subject of history, especially military history, is focused on studying the relationship between war, culture and society as well as the development of military strategy, operations and tactics. 

Duties
Duties in research include independent research activities, some responsibility for research funding and active participation in the University's research environment and the scientific community at large.

Duties in education include active participation in the development and implementation of education at basic level, advanced level and, where applicable, may include PhD level and supervision of PhD students.

A Senior Lecturer must contribute to the University's development work, and be available for management and administrative assignments and collaborate with the surrounding community.

The duties also include some teaching in other subjects' courses at the university, participation in field exercises and similar elements within the Defense Academy's military program, as well as some editorial duties.

The work includes following and contributing to the development within the subject area, both nationally and internationally, and the social development in general that is important to the work. As a lecturer, you share knowledge and contribute to the Swedish Defense University's professional development, collegial working methods and social community.

General requirements 

A teacher at the Swedish Defence University should complete training in higher education teaching, before or at the latest two years after the initiation of employment begun.

For all employment at the University, it is required that the applicant has the personal qualities needed to fulfill the employment. These must be clearly stated in the employment profile. All employees are expected to cooperate and treat colleagues and students with respect, take responsibility for the organization and their own duties, and contribute to a good working environment.

The applicant must have the ability to teach in English and understand, write and speak Swedish at B1 level (European scale), which means sufficient listening and reading comprehension to be able to participate in and contribute to meetings and other activities. If the employee does not speak Swedish at the time of employment, he/she is expected to acquire the required language skills during the first three years of employment.

Qualifications Required
Eligible to be employed as a Senior Lecturer is someone who has partly demonstrated pedagogical expertise, partly has completed a PhD degree, or has equivalent research expertise or any other professional expertise which is of importance with regard to the subject area of the employment and the duties that will be included in the employment. Assessment Criteria
The degree of such skill which is a requirement for eligibility for employment shall apply as the basis for assessment when hiring a lecturer. The test of the pedagogical skill must be given as much care as the test of the scientific one. Scholarly prowess must have been demonstrated through the ability for high-quality independent research in the subject of history, particularly military history, demonstrated by publication in relevant, well-regarded international journals and publishers. Pedagogical skill must have been demonstrated through documented pedagogical skill through teaching, planning and implementation of education at university.

It is advantageous to have previous experience from officer training or the defense sector, as well as documented experience of successful applications for external research funds.

The Swedish Defence University is a multidisciplinary environment, which is why experience of collaborations with military history-related subjects, as well as experience of national and international academic collaborations in research projects, are meritorious. In the next few years, the department plans to produce some teaching materials, which is why experience in editorial duties is an asset.

About the position
The position as Senior Lecturer is a permanent position on full-time.

An employment at the Swedish Defence University may require a security clearance for placement in a security class, which includes a security interview and, in some cases, a background check by the Swedish Security Service.

The employment may include wartime placement. If you are already stationed in a wartime placement in a state of war in your current employment at an authority and your expertise is needed in the Swedish Defence University's war organization, a negotiation will take place between the authority concerned and the Swedish Defence University about where you will be stationed.
