Senior Lecturer in System Science for Defence and Security

The Swedish Defence University is an internationally renowned university in the area of defence, crisis management and security. We offer a unique academic environment where military and civilian researchers, teachers and students interact. We educate and train top-level executives, experts, and researchers for the task of analyzing and managing current and future crises, security issues and conflicts. The university educates all military officers in the Swedish armed forces and leads the academic progression of the military profession. We conduct research in the areas of Law with a focus on International and Operational Law, Leadership and Command & Control, Military History, Political Science, Systems Science for Defence and Security and War Studies.

Duties

The position encompasses research, teaching, and administration in the field of System Science for Defence and Security with a particular interest in interdisciplinary applications and defence capability development and defence innovation.

Defence capability development and defence innovation is a multifaceted area related to both military and societal aspects of defence and security. Among other things, this could include questions related to organisation and management, defence acquisition, and capability management. It could also include topics such as systems thinking, systems engineering and logistics. Yet another field could be related to space development, cyber development or intelligence development.

Additionally, research in defence capability development and defence innovation can be in relation to military, civilian, industrial, or commercial aspects.

Responsibilities related to education include teaching and academic supervision, pedagogical development, planning of programmes and courses, administration, examinations, and course evaluation. Responsibilities related to the research include planning, conducting and managing research, contributing to obtaining research funding plus disseminating information on research nationally and internationally. The responsibilities also include higher education development and academic positions of trust. Tasks related to further the development within the field of System Science for Defence and Security and to participate in the development of the department as a research environment are also included. In addition to this, it is expected that the successful applicant will be engaged in interaction with organisations outside the Swedish Defence University. The department aims to create a balance between teaching and research.

Research, teaching and academic supervision takes place within both civilian and military educational programmes.

Qualifications

To be employed as senior lecturer (associate professor), the applicant is expected to have a proven teaching proficiency with a relevant PhD, equivalent scholarly expertise or other professional expertise relevant to the particular field and the responsibilities and tasks included in the position as senior lecturer (associate professor).

If the applicant holds a foreign degree, an assessment will be made on a case-by-case basis to determine if it can be regarded as equivalent to a Swedish degree.

Assessment criteria

The assessment criteria for the employment of a senior lecturer is the degree of proficiency required for eligibility for employment. The assessment of teaching expertise will be given equal weight to the assessment of research expertise. The pedagogical and scientific skill must be documented so that the quality can also be assessed.

The following assessment criteria are included when appointing an applicant to this position:

  • Research expertise within areas relevant for System Science for Defence and Security proven via acknowledged publication channels as well as via planning and managing research teams.
  • Teaching expertise proven via proficiency in planning, implementation and development of educational course(s) at first cycle or second cycle within relevant subjects for this position. The teaching proficiency must be well documented so that its quality can be properly assessed.

Documented experience in applied research and knowledge/experience regarding military operations and/or knowledge within civilian crisis management domain are considered an advantage.

General requirements for teachers

All teachers at the Swedish Defence University, both civilian and military, must have completed an educational programme in teacher training for higher education prior to (or no later than two years after) the start of their employment.

The applicant must have the personal traits necessary to do well in the position.

The applicant must have the ability to teach and work in English, but since this position is also intended to include administrative duties, representation duties in boards and committees etc., you must at least two years after employment understand, write and speak Swedish.

About the position

The position as Senior Lecturer is a permanent position full-time.

This employment is regulated by the Higher Education Ordinance and the Swedish Defence University's Appointments Procedure for Teaching Staff.

An employment at the Swedish Defence University may require a security clearance for placement in a security class, which includes a security interview and, in some cases, a background check by the Swedish Security Service.

The Swedish Defence University will be operating in a state of war, which means that you should be prepared to be deployed to the institution during times of conflict. If you are already deployed in your current position at an agency and your expertise is needed in the Swedish Defence University's war organization, negotiations will take place between the relevant agency and the Swedish Defence University to determine your placement.
