Senior Lecturer in Political Science with focus on crisis management

The Swedish Defence University is an internationally renowned university in the area of defence, crisis management and security. We offer a unique academic environment where military and civilian researchers, teachers and students interact. We educate and train top-level executives, experts, and researchers for the task of analyzing and managing current and future crises, security issues and conflicts. The university educates all military officers in the Swedish armed forces and leads the academic progression of the military profession. We conduct research in the areas of Law with a focus on International and Operational Law, Leadership and Command & Control, Military History, Political Science, Systems Science for Defence and Security and War Studies.

Our work includes research and education on the rules of international humanitarian law, including the right to use military force (ius ad bellum), international humanitarian law aspects of international peace operations, the laws of war (ius in bello), human rights in armed conflict, peace operations and other crisis situations, and accountability issues in international military operations at different levels of conflict and in different contexts.

The international humanitarian law research is an integral part of the overall research body at the Swedish Defence University, which is characterised by diversity and a shared focus on the conditions of crisis and armed conflict. The integration of international humanitarian law research is expressed in interdisciplinary projects in collaboration with researchers from other departments at the Swedish Defence University. In addition, we collaborate with other research institutes and initiatives, both in Sweden and abroad.

The Political Science Division at the Department of Political Science and Law (ISJ) conducts Political Science research and education in the areas of security policy and crisis and disaster management. The department's employees teach on a wide range of subjects within Political Science at the undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral level. We also contribute with teaching and competence in other civilian and military education. In addition, both grant- and commission-funded research is conducted. 

The position is placed at the Department of Political Science at SEDU in Stockholm.

Tasks

In addition to general teaching, research and administration in the subject, the position includes participation in and further development of the political science research environment.

The advertised position is intended to cover the need for research and education in the field of crisis and disaster management.

To be eligible for employment as a senior lecturer you should have a PhD in political science (or a related subject), and your research should focus on politics and management, national or comparative politics, political psychology, and/or political communication, or with a special interest in crisis and/or disaster management issues.

General requirements for teachers

A teacher at SEDU should complete training in higher education teaching and learning with  before or at the latest one and a half years after the initiation of employment begun. The applicant must have the personal qualities required to complete the position well.

The applicant should have the ability to teach in English and understand, write and speak Swedish at B1 level (European scale), which means sufficient listening and reading comprehension to be able to participate in and contribute to meetings and other activities.

The applicant must have a documented ability to teach in English. If the successful candidate is not proficient in Swedish at the time of employment, he/she is expected to acquire the required language skills during the first two years of employment.

Qualification

To be eligible for employment as a senior lecturer, the applicant must have demonstrated teaching expertise and have obtained a relevant PhD.  It may be assessed in the individual case whether a foreign degree can be considered equivalent to a Swedish degree.

Assessment criteria

The assessment criteria for the employment of a senior lecturer concern the degree of expertise that is a requirement for eligibility for the position. In addition, the degree of administrative and other skills that is of importance with regard to the subject content that the university determines for the employment and the duties that will be included in the employment shall apply. For this position, the following assessment criteria are applied:

  • Research expertise must have been demonstrated through own research, planning and management of research in political science (or equivalent) Particularly meritorious is research on politics and administration, national or comparative politics, political psychology, and/or political communication, with a particular interest in crisis management issues.
  • Teaching expertise must have been demonstrated through skills in the planning, implementation and development of education at undergraduate and/or advanced level in political science (or equivalent). Teaching expertise must be carefully documented so that the quality can also be assessed.

Employment

The position is a full-time, permanent position.

This employment is regulated by the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100) and the Swedish Defence University's appointment regulations.
