Senior lecturer in Political Science

Institutionen för säkerhet, strategi och ledarskap

The Swedish Defence University (SEDU) invites qualified applicants to apply for the position of Senior lecturer in Political Science with a specialisation in Security & Strategy

The Division of Political Science within the Department of Security, Strategy and Leadership (ISSL) conducts research primarily within two areas: Security and Strategy, and Crisis Management and International Collaboration. Political scientists mainly teach courses in political science at the undergraduate and graduate levels as well as PhD-students. In addition, faculty members provide teaching and expertise in relation to other civilian and military subjects, including contract education commissioned by both governmental and private parties.  Research is financed by grants or commissioned by contract. The position is based at the Political Science Division at SEDU in Stockholm.

Job responsibilities and tasks

The position entails teaching and research in political science particularly with focus on the security policies of the United States, Western European states and collective parties, mainly financed by contract research. Administrative tasks are also required under the position.

General requirements for teachers

All teachers at the Swedish Defence University must have completed an educational programme in teacher training in higher education with good marks prior to (or no later than one and a half years after) the start of their employment.

The applicant must have the personal traits necessary to do well in the position.

Qualifications

A person who has demonstrated teaching proficiency and has obtained a relevant PhD, or has equivalent scholarly or professional expertise relevant to the particular field and the responsibilities and tasks included in the position, has the qualification to be employed as a senior lecturer (associate professor).

If the applicant holds a foreign degree, an assessment will be made on a case-by-case basis to determine if it can be regarded as equivalent to a Swedish degree.

Assessment criteria

The assessment criteria for the employment of a senior lecturer will be subject to the degree of proficiency required for eligibility for employment. The assessment of teaching proficiency will be given equal weight to the assessment of scientific expertise.

The following assessment criteria are also included when appointing an applicant to this position:

  • teaching expertise must have been demonstrated through proficiency in planning, implementation and development of an educational programme or courses under the first or second cycle (Bachelor’s or Master’s programme). The teaching proficiency must be carefully documented so that its quality can be properly assessed.
  • scientific expertise must have been proven via one’s own research, planning and leading of research teams.

Experience in research on the security policies of the United States, Western European states and/or collective parties is advantageous. Applicants must have documented proficiency in teaching in English. If the person appointed is not proficient in Swedish at the start of their appointment, they are expected to acquire the requisite language skills during the first two years of their employment.

As the Department strives to achieve a more equal distribution of gender among its teaching staff within this subject area, the Department especially invites women applicants for this position. Where there is an unequal gender balance, the Swedish Defence University can, in the event of equally or nearly equally qualified applicants, choose to accept an applicant of an underrepresented gender.

The appointment is for a permanent full-time position with a start date to be set in consultation with the applicant.
