The Swedish Defence University is an internationally renowned university in the area of defence, crisis management and security. We educate and train top-level executives, experts, and researchers for the task of analyzing and managing current and future crises, security issues and conflicts. The university educates all military officers in the Swedish armed forces and leads the academic progression of the military profession. We conduct research in the areas of Law with a focus on International and Operational Law, Leadership and Command & Control, Military History, Political Science, Systems Science for Defence and Security and War Studies.

På strategiavdelningen bedrivs forskning och utbildning i krigsvetenskap. Strategiavdelningen präglas av mötet mellan civil och militär personal där expertis skapas av vetenskap och beprövad erfarenhet. Flera av avdelningens lärare anlitas ofta som experter inom dagsaktuella frågor om strategi och den militära professionen.
Utbildningen i krigsvetenskap vid avdelningen fokuserar främst på kurser om militärstrategi, militär maktutövning, försvarsplanering, civil-militära relationer och strategifrågor i norra Europa. Kurser som genomförs av lärare vid avdelningen finns inom bl.a. forskarutbildningen i krigsvetenskap, masterprogrammet i politik och krig, officersprogrammet, kandidatprogrammet och det högre officersprogrammet. Forskningen i krigsvetenskap vid avdelningen fokuserar främst på frågor om hur man använder, bygger upp, organiserar, och leder stridskrafter. Detta inkluderar bl.a. frågor om avskräckning, interaktionen mellan politiska mål och militära medel och metoder, civil-militära relationer, genus och krig samt försvarsplanering.

Research Assistant at the Swedish Defence University

The Strategy Division is engaged in research and education in War Studies. The division is characterized by the exchange between civilian and military staff, who create expertise from theory and empirical research. Many of our staff are in high demand because of their expertise on topical issues relating to strategy and the military profession. The Strategy Division is part of the Department of Security, Strategy and Leadership (ISSL).

Duties

The successful candidate will work on the project “Intervention by Invitation: Why States Ask For Help” which aims to globally plot and analyze when political leaders request military interventions during domestic crises. The main tasks consist of collection and coding of data as well as compilation and analysis of information collected.

Eligibility Requirements

The successful candidate will hold a Master’s degree in political science, peace and conflict research, war studies or equivalent. Moreover, the candidate should be able to independently analyze data and to draft scientific texts. An excellent knowledge of English is required.

Other Merits
Previous experience of systematic data collection and coding and/or previous experience of working as a research assistant will also be considered a merit as are knowledge of Excel and statistical software (e.g. STATA).

The candidate’s personal suitability will be of importance. You should be a good team worker at the same time as you are able to work independently.

Employment: Temporary full-time position for six months. Starting date negotiable.
