The Swedish Defence University is an internationally renowned university in the area of defence, crisis management and security. We offer a unique academic environment where military and civilian researchers, teachers and students interact. We educate and train top-level executives, experts, and researchers for the task of analyzing and managing current and future crises, security issues and conflicts. The university educates all military officers in the Swedish armed forces and leads the academic progression of the military profession. We conduct research in the areas of Law with a focus on International and Operational Law, Leadership and Command & Control, Military History, Political Science, Systems Science for Defence and Security and War Studies.

War Studies is a social science whose central object of study is war and the use of force. The discipline contains research on how military capability is created, led, organized, maintained over time and comes into effect in operations, in wars, conflicts and crises. War Studies also includes social and ethical aspects as well as critical perspectives in relation to war and warfare. The discipline has both a general theoretical and knowledge-based dimension, as well as a practical and applied dimension linked primarily to the education of officers. The Swedish Defence University is the only university in Sweden where the discipline is taught.

The position is within the Air Division, a part of the Institute of War Science and Military History (IKVM). Here you will find a working group that educates and researches air power theory and air tactics in the context of War Science. Our courses are mainly focused on the Officers' Program and the Higher Officers' Program, in both practical and theoretical education. The team of teachers who deliver the courses are composed to provide a good mix of competence and experience. Now we are looking for more military teachers to be part of our teaching-team

Job Duties

The duties as a military teacher include teaching at various courses within the Officers´ Program and the Higher Officers´ Program. Teaching includes leading seminars, giving lectures and being an instructor and mentor in practical training sessions.

You will initially be introduced to the actual teaching part of the work. As the position includes becoming a course manager and to lead other teachers in your course you will be introduced to such a role early on. The role as course manager includes developing the content of the course, coordinating its implementation with the overarching programmes and adminastration.

The Air Division naturally interacts with other parts of society, so the duties can also include various cooperation tasks. Based on capacity and interest you take part of developing the Swedish Defence University's external contact areas. This includes exchanges and collaborations with foreign military universities and with other civilian and military entities of the security sector.

As a naturally important part of the duties, competence development is included both for yourself and for the work group in order to constantly develop the educational courses and the work group's working methods. It is important that you contribute with your knowledge and experience to your colleagues.

Qualification Requirements

In order to manage the job duties, experience of working with air tactics in military organizations, abroad or in the Swedish Armed Forces is required.

We put great emphasis on your personal characteristics and in order to cope with the tasks you need to have good cooperation skills and be structured. You solve tasks independently based on given priorities. When collaborating with people with different backgrounds than yourself, it is important to have good communication skills and creatively see how differences brought together can lead to good things.

Since the Swedish Defence University recruits military teachers from Sweden as well as other countries, to know the Swedish language is not a requirement for employment. However good knowledge of the English language is a requirement. If the applicant does not speak Swedish at the time of employment, she or he will have time to acquire the necessary language skills early in their tenure.

Previous experience as a teacher or student in military education in Sweden and other countries is a merit.

As you develop in your duties, you will increasingly take on leadership roles, as a developer, and as the one who collaborates across competence boundaries. Thus, it is a merit to have experience of working with people who have different backgrounds and specialist knowledge areas than yourself.

The Swedish Defence University strives for equality and diversity within all professional groups. We welcome applicants from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds. For us, it goes without saying that we have an inclusive working climate and that our employees can combine work with active parenting.
