The Swedish Defence University is an internationally renowned university in the area of defence, crisis management and security. The university educates all military officers in the Swedish armed forces and leads the academic progression of the military profession. We conduct research in the areas of Law with a focus on International and Operational Law, Leadership and Command & Control, Military History, Political Science, Systems Science for Defence and Security and War Studies.

The Swedish Defence University (FHS) invites qualified applicants to apply for the position of senior lecturer in Leadership under Stressful Conditions, based at the Karlstad campus

Leadership Under Stressful Conditions is a field of study at the Swedish Defence University, which focuses on an individual’s capacity to influence, motivate, and facilitate others to be able to contribute to the effectiveness and success of their organisation. Leadership can also be viewed as a process to influence others to understand and agree on what needs to be done, and how this can be done effectively. In connection with risk, crisis, conflicts and war, the demands for effective leadership increase. The Leadership Under Stressful Conditions subject area includes leadership in both direct and indirect form, which is highlighted from an individual, organisational, and societal perspective.

The Leadership Department has activities in both Karlstad and Stockholm, and is part of the Department of Security, Strategy and Leadership (ISSL). The position is based at the Leadership Department’s division at the Karlstad campus, which has about 25 employees who educate and conduct research, primarily in leadership development, recruitment and selection, along with crisis and risk management.

Job responsibilities and tasks

The position encompasses research, teaching, and administration in the field of Leadership under Stressful Conditions. The responsibilities related to education include teaching and academic supervision, pedagogical development work, planning of the education programme and course, plus administration, conducting examinations along with follow-ups and evaluation of the educational programme. The responsibilities related to the research include planning, conducting and leading research, contributing to obtaining research funding plus disseminating information nationally and internationally about one’s own research. The responsibilities related to Administrative work primarily include course administration, academic positions of trust and higher education development. There are also responsibilities included in the position related to assisting to further develop the field of Leadership Under Stressful Conditions and participating in the development of the Department as a research environment. In addition to this, it is expected that the successful applicant will be engaged in interaction with the community outside of the University.

Research, teaching and academic supervision takes place within both civilian and military educational programmes.

General requirements for teachers

Civilian and military teachers at the Swedish Defence University must have completed a course in teaching and learning in higher education prior to, or no later than one and a half years after the start of their employment.

The applicant must possess the personal traits necessary to do well in the position.

Qualifications

A person who has proven teaching proficiency and has obtained a relevant PhD, or has equivalent scholarly expertise or some other professional expertise relevant to the particular field and the responsibilities and tasks included in the position, has the qualification to be employed as senior lecturer (associate professor).

If the applicant holds a foreign degree, an assessment will be made on a case-by-case basis to determine if it can be regarded as equivalent to a Swedish degree.

Assessment criteria

The assessment criteria for the employment of a senior lecturer will be subject to the degree of proficiency required for eligibility for employment. The assessment of teaching proficiency will be given equal weight to the assessment of scientific expertise.

The following assessment criteria are also included when appointing an applicant to this position:

  • Capacity to independently engage in research of superior quality within the field of leadership (can be beyond only leadership under stressful conditions) with a background in, for instance, pedagogy, psychology, political science, sociology or business administration. The applicant’s scientific expertise must have been proven via their own research, planning and leading of research teams.
  • The applicant’s teaching expertise must have been proven via proficiency in planning, implementation and development of an educational programme/courses at first cycle or second cycle (Bachelor’s or Masters’ programme) within relevant subjects for the position (see above). The teaching proficiency must be carefully documented so that its quality can be properly assessed.

It would be an added plus if the candidate had:

  • Experience with applied research.
  • Knowledge of the domains the military operates in and/or knowledge of the civilian crisis management domain.
  • Experience with teaching and education in the field of leadership.

Applicants must have documented proficiency in teaching in English. If the person appointed is not proficient in Swedish at the start of their appointment, they are expected to acquire the necessary language skills during the first two years of employment.

The appointment

The appointment is for a permanent full-time position with a start date to be set in consultation with the applicant.
