The Swedish Defence University is an internationally renowned university in the area of defence, crisis management and security. We offer a unique academic environment where military and civilian researchers, teachers and students interact. We educate and train top-level executives, experts, and researchers for the task of analyzing and managing current and future crises, security issues and conflicts. The university educates all military officers in the Swedish armed forces and leads the academic progression of the military profession. We conduct research in the areas of Law with a focus on International and Operational Law, Leadership and Command & Control, Military History, Political Science, Systems Science for Defence and Security and War Studies.
War Studies is a social science whose central object of study is war and the use of force. The discipline contains research on how military capability is created, led, organized, maintained over time and comes into effect in operations, in wars, conflicts and crises. War Studies also includes social and ethical aspects as well as critical perspectives in relation to war and warfare. The discipline has both a general theoretical and knowledge-based dimension, as well as a practical and applied dimension linked primarily to the education of officers. The Swedish Defence University is the only university in Sweden where the discipline is taught.
IKV has six departments, each headed by a Head of Division and a Deputy Head of Division. At IKV, the principle of ‘double-handedness’ is applied when appointing department heads.
The double-handed approach means that the Higher Education Act's requirement for scientific competence in decision-making concerning the quality of education and research must be supplemented with requirements for military professional competence in the organisation, implementation and follow-up of military professional education. The head of division and deputy head of disvion must therefore complement each other, so that the division management includes both scientific and military professional expertise.
In the Operations Division and the Functions and Perspectives Division, the heads of division have military professional expertise but lack scientific expertise. We are therefore looking for a Deputy Head of Division who is scientifically competent to support these two heads of division. The assignment means that you are part of the department management for both the operational department and the department for functions and perspectives.
The heads of department work in close collaboration with directors of studies, those responsible for research, other assignments and studies. In the role of Deputy Head of Division, you will be responsible for supporting and guiding academic staff in the two divisions, in particular junior researchers who need to qualify for promotion, not least during the staff appraisal period.
The Heads of Division work in close co-operation with the Directors of Studies, Heads of Research, Other Assignments and Studies. In the role of Deputy Head of Division, you will be responsible for supporting and guiding academic staff in the two divisions, especially junior researchers who need to merit for promotion, not least during performance reviews.
You will also support the Heads of Division in all matters related to the quality of teaching and research, including the supply of expertise to the department. Together you are part of the department's management team and are thereby expected to take responsibility for the common and contribute to the department achieving its operational goals.
The position requires:
We attach great importance to your personal qualities, such as a high level of independence, ability to work in a team and flexibility.
In order to fulfil the assignment, you must exercise trust-based leadership with great social skills and good work management skills. You have the ability to simultaneously manage both day-to-day activities and long-term development and, together with the institution's management team, contribute to running the institution's activities and take responsibility for the common good.
