Associate senior lecturers in System Science for Defence and Security

The Swedish Defence University is an internationally renowned university in the area of defence, crisis management and security. We conduct research in the areas of Law with a focus on International and Operational Law, Leadership and Command & Control, Military History, Political Science, Systems Science for Defence and Security and War Studies.

The Department of Systems Science for Defence and Security conducts research and education at the intersection of social sciences and engineering. The subject is interdisciplinary and studies how a combination of social and technical components affect the systems used for the defence and security of society. The subject's employees primarily teach within the Officer Programme, the Master's Programme in Defence and Security Systems Development, and the Higher Officer Programme. They also contribute by provided teaching and expertise in other civilian and military education programmes, including contract education commissioned by both governmental and private parties. Research is either financed by grants or commissioned by contract.

The subject of System Science for defence and Security conducts research and education at the intersection of social sciences and engineering. Job responsibilities

The position is an appointment pertaining to research, of at least 50%, in the subject of System Science for Defence and Security, i.e., studies on the interactions between technical and social components which affect or contribute to defence and security. The appointment also includes course responsibility, work with examinations and administrative tasks. The job responsibilities also include applying for your own research funding, supporting the work of subject development and contributing to collaboration and development of contacts with the Swedish Armed Forces and the surrounding society.

Qualifications

A person who holds a relevant doctorate or has equivalent academic competence is qualified for appointment as an associate senior lecturer. In particular, persons should be considered who have obtained a PhD or achieved equivalent competence no more than five years prior to the end of the application period, unless there are special reasons for exemption to this general rule, such as sickness, parental leave or other explanatory circumstances. If the applicant holds a foreign degree, an assessment will be made on a case-by-case basis to determine if it can be considered equivalent to a Swedish degree.

Assessment criteria

The capacity for good quality independent research work is the main assessment grounds for appointment as an associate senior lecturer.

For this appointment, the following assessment grounds apply in order of priority:

  • An ability for high-quality independent research within defence, crisis management and security that has been demonstrated through publication in relevant channels. Of extra importance is research experience in one of the following areas: modelling and simulation, systems engineering, capability analysis, design of complex systems and information security.
  • Experience of sociotechnical research and/or research collaboration with authorities or enterprise.
  • Teaching expertise demonstrated through teaching and the planning and implementation of education at a higher education institution.

Applicants must have documented proficiency in teaching in English. If the successful candidate is not proficient in Swedish at the start of the appointment, he or she is expected to acquire the requisite language skills during the first two years of employment. Experience of national and international academic collaboration in research projects and documented experience of successful applications for external research funding provide useful qualifications.

As the Department is striving to achieve a more equal distribution of gender among its teaching staff within the subject area in question, the Department especially invites woman applicants to apply for this position. Where there is gender imbalance, the Swedish Defence University may, in the case of equally or nearly equally qualified applicants, appoint an applicant from the underrepresented gender.

General requirements for teachers

Civilian and military teachers at the Swedish Defence University must have completed a course in teaching and learning in higher education prior to, or no later than one and a half years after the start of their employment. The applicant must possess the personal traits necessary to do well in the position.

The appointment 

The position is a full-time appointment lasting four years, with a start date to be agreed upon by the prospective employee and the university. The appointment is a career development position with a focus on the possibility of qualifying for other teaching positions for which there are higher eligibility requirements and which involve permanent employment.
