The Swedish Defence University hereby announces a vacancy for an associate senior lecturer in the Science of Command and Control
This position is based at the Division of Science of Command and Control and Military Technology at the Department of Military Studies (MVI) in Stockholm. The purpose of the subject of science of command and control is to support the development of command and control systems. It includes work methods, organisation and technical support systems which are needed to command military and civilian operations in conjunction with major crises, conflicts and war. The subject is supported by knowledge gained from a number of other fields, for example, system science, engineering sciences, human-computer interaction, psychology, organisation theory, risk and security. The research done at the Division of Science of Command and Control and Military Technology contributes to the development of the field at both national and international level.

The research is primarily contract-driven and is funded in the main through contracts from the Swedish Armed Forces, the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency and similar bodies.

Work tasks
The work tasks will consist of research, education and administration within the subject of science of command and control, and the development of the subject together with the other members of the research group. The position comprises mainly research work. The position may also include work involving study for contract assignments for the Swedish Armed Forces among others. The work may also include course coordination, examination tasks, administrative tasks, and the drawing-up of applications for research funding. The position involves a relatively large amount of contact with clients and the bodies that will make use of the university’s research findings.

Qualification requirements
The qualification requirement for appointment as an associate senior lecturer is a completed doctoral degree or the equivalent academic qualification. Priority will be given to applicants who completed their doctoral degree or attained the equivalent qualification maximum five years before the end of the application period. The degree qualification must have been issued before the end of the application period. It will be assessed from case to case whether a university degree qualification from abroad can be deemed as being the equivalent of a Swedish qualification.

An associate senior lecturer at the Swedish Defence University must have successfully completed university teacher training before or latest 18 months after the appointment has commenced.

Assessment criteria
The following assessment criteria will be examined and weighed as a whole for this appointment:

  • The ability to conduct independent research of good quality.
  • Experience of research on command and control in a crisis and/or war.
  • Experience of design science/normative research.
  • Experience of practice-oriented research.
  • Knowledge of the military domain and/or knowledge of the domain of civilian crisis management.
  • Documented pedagogical skills.

The applicant must have a documented ability to teach in English. If the successful candidate does not have a command of Swedish at the time of appointment, he/she is expected to acquire the necessary language skills during the first two years of the appointment.

The applicant must have the personal qualities required to undertake the appointment successfully.

Appointment
The appointment is a full-time appointment for four years. The appointment is a career development position which offers the candidate the opportunity to gain qualifications for a teaching appointment where higher qualifications are required. An appointment of this kind implies a permanent position.
