Associate Senior Lecturer in War Studies

The Swedish Defence University is an internationally renowned university in the area of defence, crisis management and security. We offer a unique academic environment where military and civilian researchers, teachers and students interact. We educate and train top-level executives, experts, and researchers for the task of analyzing and managing current and future crises, security issues and conflicts. The university educates all military officers in the Swedish armed forces and leads the academic progression of the military profession. We conduct research in the areas of Law with a focus on International and Operational Law, Leadership and Command & Control, Military History, Political Science, Systems Science for Defence and Security and War Studies.

War Studies is a social science whose central object of study is war and the use of force. The discipline contains research on how military capability is created, led, organized, maintained over time and comes into effect in operations, in wars, conflicts and crises. War Studies also includes social and ethical aspects as well as critical perspectives in relation to war and warfare. The discipline has both a general theoretical and knowledge-based dimension, as well as a practical and applied dimension linked primarily to the education of officers. The Swedish Defence University is the only university in Sweden where the discipline is taught.

The Swedish Defence University is now looking for Associate Senior Lecturers in War Studies with placement at the Department of War Studies and Military History in Stockholm. The department conducts research and education in the discipline of War Studies and its teachers educate at all levels (including research education) in the civilian and military programs. These include the Officer Programme (OP), the Senior Officer Programme (HOP) and the civilian Master Programme in Politics, Security and War.

Duties

The appointment involves research, at least 50 percent, as well as teaching and administrative tasks in the subject of War Studies. In addition to conducting and planning your own research, the position involves course responsibility, supervision, pedagogical development work, educational planning and administration, examination, evaluation and assessment of education, as well as academic fiduciary duties. The appointment furthermore includes applying for research funding, track developments within the subject area of War Studies, both nationally and internationally, as well as other developments of concern for the work. As Associate Senior Lecturer, you share knowledge and contribute to the University’s professional development, collegial working methods and social community. 

Qualifications 

The person eligible to be employed as an Associate Senior Lecturer has completed a doctorate or has the equivalent scientific competence. Priority is given to those candidates who have completed a doctoral degree or achieved equivalent competence no more than five years before the end of the application period. Those who have obtained eligibility earlier may be considered if special reasons apply. Such special reasons refer to leave due to illness, parental leave or other similar circumstances. Whether a foreign degree can be considered equivalent to a Swedish degree, will be assessed in each individual case. 

Assessment grounds

The capacity for independent research work of good quality is the main assessment grounds for appointment as an Associate Senior Lecturer.

It is of the highest importance that the applicant has: 

  • Documented ability for independent research of high-quality in subject areas related to war, warfare, and conflict that is demonstrated by publication in relevant, well-regarded international journals and publishers. 
  • Documented pedagogical skills that are demonstrated through teaching, planning and implementation of education at university, in areas relevant to the discipline. 

It is of high importance that the applicant has:

  • Experience of national and international academic collaborations in research projects
  • Experience in applying for external research funding 
  • Experience from the defence or security sector  

General requirements for teachers 

A teacher, civilian or military, at the Swedish Defence University must have completed higher pedagogical training with an approved results before, or at least one and a half years after, the employment began. 

The applicant must have the personal qualities required to do the job well. 

The applicant must have the ability to teach in English and understand, write and speak Swedish at least at B1 level (European scale). If the applicant does not speak Swedish at the time of employment, he/she is expected to obtain the required language skills during the first two years of employment. 

In cases where there is an uneven gender balance, the Swedish Defence University may, if the applicants’ qualifications are equal or largely equal, hire the underrepresented gender. As the Department strives for a more even gender distribution within War Studies, the University welcomes women as applicants for this position.  

About the appointment

The appointment is full-time for four years. The appointment is a career-development position with a focus on the possibility of promotion to a teaching post subject to higher qualification requirements, and where such a post entails permanent employment. Swedish and international applicants are welcome.
