Senior lecturer in war studies specialized in game-based learning

The Department of War Studies and Military History

The Swedish Defence University is now seeking a Senior Lecturer in War Studies, specializing in game-based learning, to be based at the Department of War Studies and Military History (IKVM) in Stockholm. The department is involved in teaching and research in the field of war studies, and the instructors teach at all levels (including doctoral level) in both civilian and military programs. The advertised position is linked to research on game-based learning and the use of games in military professions, where the department provides games for military education purposes. The research is conducted in close collaboration with officer education and the department's own game development.

Responsibilities

The responsibilities include leading, planning, and conducting research in the subject of War Studies, with a particular focus on game-based learning and the use of games in military education. Additionally, the position involves applying for research funding, contributing to pedagogical development, as well as fostering collaboration and developing contacts with the Armed Forces and the surrounding community.

The work also includes teaching, in Swedish and English, at undergraduate, advanced, and doctoral levels, as well as supervising students and doctoral candidates in various programs offered by the department. The position also entails course design, course coordination, planning and participation in game-based instruction, examination, course administration, and academic committee assignments.

As a senior lecturer in War Studies, you will monitor and contribute to the development of the field, both nationally and internationally, as well as the societal developments that are relevant to the position. You will also share knowledge and contribute to the professional development, collegial work practices, and social community at the Swedish Defence University.

Qualifications

To be eligible for employment as a senior lecturer, the candidate must demonstrate pedagogical skills and hold a doctoral degree or possess equivalent scientific competence or other professional skills that are relevant to the subject matter and the duties of the position. Assessment Criteria

In the assessment of a senior lecturer appointment, the degree of expertise required for eligibility shall be considered. The evaluation of pedagogical skills shall be given equal attention as the evaluation of other eligibility criteria.

It is of utmost importance that the applicant has:

  • Documented scientific proficiency, demonstrated through the ability to conduct independent research of high quality within the field of War Studies (including planning and leadership) or equivalent areas relevant to the field of wargaming. This includes research on educational and/or analytical games or other practical educational elements in higher education, such as simulations or exercises. This should be evidenced by publications in reputable international journals and publishers.
  • Pedagogical skills, demonstrated through teaching, planning, and implementation of education at the university level. The pedagogical skills should be documented, so that also the quality can be assessed.

It is of high importance that the applicant has:

  • Professional experience in the use and/or development of wargames.
  • Experience in work or collaborations within the defence sector.
  • Experience in higher education administrative tasks.

General requirements for teachers

A teacher, civilian or military, at the Swedish Defence University must have completed higher pedagogical training with an approved results before, or at least one and a half years after, the employment began.

The applicant must have the personal qualities required to do the job well.

The applicant must have the ability to teach in English and understand, write and speak Swedish at least at B1 level (European scale), which entails sufficient listening and reading comprehension to participate in and contribute to meetings and other activities. If the applicant is not proficient in Swedish at the time of employment, he/she is expected to obtain the required language skills during the first three years of employment.

In cases where there is an uneven gender balance, the Swedish Defence University may, if the applicants’ qualifications are equal or largely equal, prioritize the applicant of the underrepresented gender. About the position

The appointment as senior lecturer is a full-time permanent position.

This appointment is governed by the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100) and the Swedish Defence University's employment regulations.

An employment at the Swedish Defence University may require a security clearance for placement in a security class, which includes a security interview and, in some cases, a background check by the Swedish Security Service. The Swedish  Defence University will be operating in a state of war, which means that you should be prepared to be deployed to the institution during times of conflict. If you are already deployed in your current position at an agency and your expertise is needed in the Swedish Defence University's war organization, negotiations will take place between the relevant agency and the Swedish Defence University to determine your placement.
