Duties of the Deputy Head of Division

IKV has six departments, each headed by a Head of Division and a Deputy Head of Division. At IKV, the principle of ‘double-handedness’ is applied when appointing department heads.

The double-handed approach means that the Higher Education Act's requirement for scientific competence in decision-making concerning the quality of education and research must be supplemented with requirements for military professional competence in the organisation, implementation and follow-up of military professional education. The head of division and deputy head of disvion must therefore complement each other, so that the division management includes both scientific and military professional expertise.

In the Army, Air & Navy Divisions, the heads of division have military professional expertise but lack scientific expertise. We are therefore looking for a Deputy Head of Division who is scientifically competent to support these two heads of division. The assignment means that you are part of the department management with responsibility for all three tactical divisions (army, navy & air).

The heads of department work in close collaboration with directors of studies, those responsible for research, other assignments and studies. In the role of Deputy Head of Division, you will be responsible for supporting and guiding academic staff in the two divisions, in particular junior researchers who need to qualify for promotion, not least during the staff appraisal period.

The Heads of Division work in close co-operation with the Directors of Studies, Heads of Research, and of Other Assignments and Studies. In the role of Deputy Head of Division, you will be responsible for supporting and guiding academic staff in the two divisions, especially junior researchers who need to merit for promotion, not least during performance reviews.

You will also support the Heads of Division in all matters related to the quality of teaching and research, including the supply of expertise to the department. Together you are part of the department's management team and are thereby expected to take responsibility for the common and contribute to the department achieving its operational goals.

Qualifications

The position requires:

• Permanent employment as a teacher or military teacher in War Studies with scientific competence, where you are at least a senior lecturer.
• Several years of experience in research and teaching at university level.
• Experience in academic mentoring.
• Experience in promotion processes at university level.
• Good ability to co-operate with others.
• Good written and spoken communication skills in both Swedish and English. 

Desirable experience

• Possess scientific competence as an associate professor (docent).
• Experience of working as a manager and leader in the higher education sector.
• Experience of similar tasks at FHS or at other higher education institutions. 
• Good knowledge of national and FHS-specific regulations and guidelines for merit and promotion.

Personal qualities

In order to fulfil the assignment, you must exercise trust-based leadership with great social skills and good work management skills. You have the ability to simultaneously manage both day-to-day activities and long-term development and, together with the institution's management team, contribute to running the institution's activities and take responsibility for the common good.

About the assignment

Employees of the Swedish Defence University and employees of the Swedish Armed Forces are eligible to apply for the position of Deputy Head of Division. The Deputy Head of Division is appointed by the Head of Department and is a fixed-term appointment of three years with the possibility of extension.
