We conduct research in the areas of Law with a focus on International and Operational Law, Leadership and Command & Control, Military History, Political Science, Systems Science for Defence and Security and War Studies.

The position is located at the Operations Functions Section of the Operational Division of the Department of Military Science in Stockholm. At the Swedish Defence University, military science is the main topic of military education and includes the study of war, warfare and the management of conflicts in which military resources are used. The subject's employees contribute to civilian and military education programmes, including contract education commissioned by both governmental and private parties.

Job responsibilities and tasks

The position relates to research and teaching as well as administration within the subject of military science with a focus on defence logistics and supply chains for the needs of total defence. Initially, the position will be part of the staffing of a major research project within this focus area. In addition to conducting research, the duties also include teaching and participation in other parts of the Swedish Defence University's military programme, applying for research funding, and supporting work relating to subject development and the development of the research area. The duties also include contributing to collaboration and the development of contacts with the Swedish Armed Forces, other universities, countries and organisations relevant to the development of this research area and the surrounding society.

General requirements for teachers

Civilian and military teachers at the Swedish Defence University must have completed a course in teaching and learning in higher education prior to, or no later than one and a half years after the start of their employment.

The applicant must possess the personal traits necessary to do well in the position.

Qualifications

Eligible applicants to the senior lecturer position have either demonstrated pedagogical proficiency, or have a doctorate, or possess equivalent scientific expertise with regard to the subject content and the work responsibilities of the position.

An assessment of whether a foreign degree may be considered equivalent to a Swedish degree is made in each individual case.

Assessment criteria

The assessment criteria for the employment of a senior lecturer will be subject to the degree of proficiency required to be eligible for employment. The assessment of teaching proficiency will be given equal weight to the assessment of scientific expertise.

The following assessment criteria are also included when appointing an applicant to this position:

  • Scientific expertise must have been demonstrated through the applicant’s own high-quality research in the field of logistics and supply chains (SCM) relating to military science or an equivalent area, as well as the planning and management of research.
  • Teaching expertise must have been proven through proficiency in planning, implementation and development of an educational programme/courses at the first-cycle and/or second-cycle level (Bachelor’s or Masters’ programme). The teaching proficiency must be carefully documented so that its quality can also be assessed.

The Swedish Defence University is a multidisciplinary environment, which is why experience of collaborations with related subjects, as well as experience of national and international academic collaborations in research projects, is a ‘plus’.

It is also advantageous to have documented experience with the drafting of successful applications for external research funding, and supervision, experience of officer training at different levels, or other relevant experience from the defence sector.

Applicants must have documented proficiency in teaching in English and Swedish. If the person appointed is not proficient in Swedish at the start of their appointment, they are expected to acquire the necessary language skills during the first two years of employment.

As the Department is striving to achieve a more equal distribution of gender among its teaching staff within this subject, the Department especially invites woman applicants to apply for this position. Where there is an unequal gender balance, the Swedish Defence University can, in the event of equally or nearly equally qualified applicants, choose to accept an applicant of an underrepresented gender.

The appointment

The appointment is for a permanent full-time position with a start date to be set in consultation with the applicant.

The position is assigned a security classification, which requires approved security clearance with a register check in accordance with the provisions of Swedish security legislation.

The Swedish Defence University strives for equality and diversity among all its positions. We welcome applicants with different ethnic and cultural backgrounds. It is natural for us to strive for an inclusive work climate and for our employees to be able to combine work with active parenting.
