The Swedish Defence University (SEDU) invites qualified applicants to apply for the position of senior lecturer in political science with a focus on crisis management and international collaboration

The Division of Political Science at the Department of Security, Strategy and Leadership (ISSL) conducts research and education in crisis management and international collaboration, and in security policy and strategy. Faculty members mainly teach within the field of political science at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels including PhD studies. They also provide teaching and expertise in other civilian and military programmes, including commissioned programmes. Research is funded by both grant and by commission. The position is based at the Political Science Division at SEDU in Stockholm.

Job description

The position involves teaching and research in crisis management and international collaboration as well as administrational duties. With reference to existing competence in the division, this senior lecturer's position concerns both teaching and research related to crisis and disaster management in research areas other than the political science sub discipline of international relations/organisations. Teaching may also include quantitative methods.

General requirements for teachers

Civilian and military teachers at the Swedish Defence University must have completed a course in teaching and learning in higher education prior to, or no later than one and a half years after the start of their employment.

The applicant must possess the personal traits necessary to excel in the position.

Qualifications

A person who has demonstrated teaching proficiency and has obtained a relevant PhD, or has equivalent scholarly or professional expertise relevant to the particular field, holds the appropriate qualifications for employment as a senior lecturer.

If the applicant holds a foreign degree, an assessment will be made on a case-by-case basis to determine if it can be regarded as equivalent to a Swedish degree.

Assessment criteria

The assessment of teaching proficiency will be given equal weight to the assessment of research expertise. The following assessment criteria will also be included when appointing an applicant to this position:

  • Established teaching expertise demonstrated through proficiency in planning, implementation and development of programmes/courses at the first-cycle and/or second-cycle level. Teaching proficiency must be carefully documented such that its quality can also be properly assessed.
  • Established expertise demonstrated through the candidate’s own research, planning and leading of research teams. Crisis and disaster management research in areas other than the political science sub discipline of international relations/organisations is an advantage.

Since the department recognises the importance of methodological diversity in research and education, documented methodological skills, especially in quantitative methods, are an advantage.

Applicants must possess the ability to teach in English and Swedish. If the successful candidate is not proficient in Swedish at the start of the appointment, he or she is expected to acquire the requisite language skills during the first two years of employment.

As the department seeks to achieve gender balance among teachers of the subject concerned, the department welcomes applicants from both genders. Where there is gender imbalance, the Swedish Defence University may, in the case of equally or nearly equally qualified applicants, appoint an applicant from the underrepresented gender.

The appointment

The appointment is for a permanent full-time position with a start date to be set in consultation with the successful applicant.

The Swedish Defence University strives for equality and diversity among all its positions. We welcome applicants with different ethnic and cultural backgrounds. We strive for an inclusive work climate and for our employees to be able to combine work with active parenting.
