War Studies is a social science whose central object of study is war and the use of force. War Studies also includes social and ethical aspects as well as critical perspectives in relation to war and warfare. The discipline has both a general theoretical and knowledge-based dimension, as well as a practical and applied dimension linked primarily to the education of officers. The Swedish Defence University is the only university in Sweden where the discipline is taught.

At the Swedish Defence University, War Studies, whose central study object is war and the use of force, is one of the main subjects in military education and civilian programmes. Logistics and supply chains study the creation and maintenance of military resources. War Studies faculty contribute to civilian and military education programmes, as well as contract education commissioned by both governmental and private parties.

It is an advantage if the applicant is able to demonstrate experience in the planning and management of research, as well as in successful applications for external research funding.
