The position is located at the Operations Functions Section of the Operational Division of the Department of Military Science in Stockholm. The subject's employees contribute to civilian and military education programmes, including contract education commissioned by both governmental and private parties.

The position relates to research of at least 50%, as well as teaching and administration in the field of military science with a focus on offensive and defensive cyber warfare in military operations. Applicants may have backgrounds in sociology, social anthropology, peace and conflict research, or political science. In addition to conducting research, the duties also include teaching and participation in exercises and other parts of the Swedish Defence University's programme, as well as supporting work relating to subject development and the development of the cyber research area. The duties also include contributing to collaboration and the development of contacts with the Swedish Armed Forces, other universities, countries and organisations relevant to the development of this research area and the surrounding society.

General requirements for teachers

Civilian and military teachers at the Swedish Defence University must have completed a course in teaching and learning in higher education prior to, or no later than one and a half years after the start of their employment.

The applicant must possess the personal traits necessary to do well in the position.

Qualifications

Applicants for the position of associate senior lecturer must have a PhD or possess equivalent scientific competence. In particular, persons should be considered who have obtained a PhD or achieved equivalent competence no more than five years prior to the end of the application period, unless there are special reasons for exemption to this general rule, such as sickness, parental leave or other explanatory circumstances.

An assessment of whether a foreign degree may be considered equivalent to a Swedish degree is made in each individual case.

Assessment criteria

The primary assessment criteria for employment as an associate senior lecturer is the applicant’s degree of expertise in independent research work within the field to which the call for applications relates.

In addition, the following assessment criteria are also weighed when appointing an applicant to this position:

  • Publication in relevant, well-regarded international journals and publishing houses within the subject of military science with a focus on cyber warfare.
  • Documented teaching expertise demonstrated through teaching and the planning and implementation of education at a higher education institution.

The Swedish Defence University is a multidisciplinary environment, which is why experience of collaborations with related subjects, as well as experience of national and international academic collaborations in research projects, is a ‘plus’.

It is also advantageous to have documented experience in quantitative research and supervision, experience of officer training at different levels, or other relevant experience from the defence sector.

Applicants must have documented proficiency in teaching in English and Swedish. If the person appointed is not proficient in Swedish at the start of their appointment, they are expected to acquire the necessary language skills during the first two years of employment.

As the Department is striving to achieve a more equal distribution of gender among its teaching staff within the subject area in question, the Department especially invites woman applicants to apply for this position. Where there is an unequal gender balance, the Swedish Defence University can, in the event of equally or nearly equally qualified applicants, choose to accept an applicant of an underrepresented gender.

The appointment

The position is a full-time appointment lasting four years, with a start date to be agreed upon by the prospective employee and the university. The appointment is a career development position with a focus on the possibility of qualifying for other teaching positions for which there are higher qualification requirements. Such a position involves permanent employment.

The position is assigned a security classification, which requires approved security clearance with a register check in accordance with the provisions of Swedish security legislation.

The assessment criteria on which the possibility of promotion is based are set out in the Swedish Defence University's appointment procedure for teachers.

The Swedish Defence University strives for equality and diversity among all its positions. We welcome applicants with different ethnic and cultural backgrounds. It is natural for us to strive for an inclusive work climate and for our employees to be able to combine work with active parenting.
